France Launches New Sustainable Certification for Beef ProducersParis, November 14, 2025 – The French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty announced today the launch of the "Eco-Boeuf France" certification, a new label designed to recognize beef producers who meet strict environmental and animal welfare standards. The certification, developed in collaboration with industry associations and environmental organizations, marks a major step in France's efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its livestock sector. To obtain the certification, producers must adhere to criteria including limiting herd density, using at least 60% grass-based feed for cattle over six months old, and implementing manure management systems that minimize methane emissions. Additionally, farmers are required to maintain biodiversity on their lands by preserving hedgerows and natural water sources. "French beef is renowned worldwide for its quality, and now we're adding a strong sustainability credential to that reputation," said Marie Leclerc, director of the Ministry's Livestock Division. Early data shows that over 1,200 producers have already applied for the certification, representing approximately 15% of France's beef production capacity. Major retailers such as Carrefour and Auchan have committed to stocking Eco-Boeuf France products, with dedicated shelf space set to launch in January 2026. Industry experts note that the certification could help French beef regain market share in countries like Germany and the UK, where consumers are increasingly prioritizing sustainable food choices. A 2024 survey by the French Agricultural Research Institute found that 78% of European consumers would pay a 10-15% premium for sustainably certified beef. |
