French Pork Industry Adopts Blockchain Technology for Supply Chain TransparencyParis, November 5, 2025 – The French Pork Producers' Federation (FNP) announced today that it has rolled out a blockchain-based traceability system across 80% of the country's pork supply chain, making France the first European country to implement such a widespread technology for pork production. The system, developed in partnership with tech firm IBM France, allows consumers to track the entire journey of pork products from farm to supermarket using a QR code on the packaging. Scanning the code provides information including the farm where the pig was raised, its breed, feed ingredients, veterinary checks, processing location, and transportation details. Producers and retailers also benefit from real-time data on inventory levels and product freshness. "Transparency is key to rebuilding consumer trust in the pork industry following several food safety scares across Europe in recent years," said Pierre Moreau, president of the FNP. "This blockchain system gives consumers unprecedented visibility into how their food is produced, and it helps us quickly identify and address any issues in the supply chain." The FNP invested €15 million in the project, which has been tested over the past two years in the Brittany and Normandy regions. Early feedback from consumers has been positive, with a survey conducted by the FNP finding that 72% of those who used the QR code said it increased their confidence in French pork products. Major retailers including Monoprix and Leclerc have reported a 12% increase in sales of pork products with the blockchain QR code since their launch in September 2025. The FNP plans to extend the system to 100% of the pork supply chain by mid-2026. |
